We are surrounded by sounds that we do not pay attention to as well as those that stay in our memory for a long time. After some time we stop paying attention to them, and the noise becomes part of our everyday life. The sounds of the street, conversations on the tram, the radio, all merge into one sound commonly known as noise. After some time, we get used to it, even ignore it. It does not stop affecting us though.
Sometimes it makes us feel better, sometimes worse. Each of us had that feeling when a song or a piece of music that we haven’t heard for a long time evokes events of the past and makes us smile. Some sounds will pass away forever and we will know them only from films or radio recordings. The sound of typing has been replaced by the sound of the computer keyboard. Soon, that as well will disappear into history, and be replaced by… well, I’m curious. Only a few of us remember the sound of film being wound on in analogue cameras. And the thrill that goes with it – whether the picture will come out good or we should do another one to make sure. In my work I record the sounds of instruments such as the guitar and drums. Added to this are vocals and we have finished material to burn or create a soundtrack for a film. This requires not only perfect hearing, but most of all a good feeling and patience. In the studio there is perfect silence, no sounds come from outside. Then I am sure that the end result will be exactly what I expected at the beginning. We work in hours on end, more than a dozen sometimes. There are no half measures. I am a perfectionist and I expect the same from the people I work with. In my apartment there are no unnecessary elements. When I come back after a long session, I want to be in an environment that is composed like a piece of music, where every detail reflects my personality and has its place. In addition to my studio, another important room is the kitchen. I spend a lot of time there, not only for cooking, which is my second passion. Usually before going to the studio, I listen again over my morning coffee the work I mixed the day before and wonder if the sound we obtained is what we intended. There are also such days when after several hours of intense work I go home and sit in silence. No sounds, no noises that could disrupt that state. I look at the photos in the decors and the music slowly begins to come to my mind. First one tone, then another, then the bass, the trumpet… and then I know that I want to create in the studio the next day – the idea that was born in my imagination. My „Sound of Silence”.
